What is Astrology?

Astrology is a conversation.

Astrology is an opening.

Astrology is about creating the future.

Astrology is about the relationship between you and the cosmos. This relationship is one of a mutual mirroring. You mirror the cosmos, the cosmos mirrors you.

An astrology chart gives a configuration of symbols, and a set of emphases, and shows where your attention and talents are likely to be focused in order to gain life-experience and mastery. How you play out your life and chart are up to you, according to your CHARACTER, which is formed according to your ethical-religious-spiritual path.

Consider that your astrological chart is a map that you can use or not use to get where you want to go. If you have any uncertainty about how to get where you're going in unfamiliar territory, most people would agree that it's just plain easier and prudent to use a map or ask directions, rather than proceed by trial and error in unfamiliar territory. Once you get close to where you want to go, i.e., get to an intersection or to an address, then what you do there is up to you. However, astute coaching may help you even there, depending on your goals for the situation.

No Limits

Astrology and your birthchart do not limit you at all. In fact, what I have found in 26 years of professional astrology is that people who are very much in their own energy, who have been very "worked-on" in therapy and personal growth, will most easily exemplify their birthcharts and usually enjoy more freedom and life-success. These people are also very interested in how they relate to the larger universe in all dimensions. Those who are NOT in their own energy, i.e., who are operating off of conditioning and programming, and have unresolved trauma in their past, do not exemplify their charts as clearly, and they are also far less successful in life - though paradoxically more defiant about not wanting to be limited by anything or anybody, while being very limited in ways they do not see or are not willing to resolve.

We should never use astrology to elicit fear, to excuse failure, to avoid responsibility. Ideally, astrology will help you engage more fully with life - win on many levels, and help others win, too!

Developmentally, we move from being other-determined, to being self-determined, to being whole-determined. It will be the other-determined people who are most adamant about not being limited by something they see as external to themselves - these people are trying to break free of conditioning, programming and slavery.

Self-determined individuals also want maximum freedom, now also freedom-to, not just freedom-from. Once self-determined folks discover that each factor in an astrological chart has a full spectrum of possible manifestation, identifying and choosing the highest potentials makes sense for both short and long term success. Self-determined individuals welcome the additional assessment data leading toward life-success that good astrological consulting provides.

We do not exist in a vacuum, and eventually the self-determined individual broadens his horizons to consider that the microcosm and macrocosm reflect and mirror each other, as do all of the people in his life. Life becomes even more fascinating as issues of contribution, collaboration, co-creation, aliveness, and harmony rise to the top of his list of wants.

Astrology helps get you into the ballpark of success. How you play the game after that is up to you - your character and application of self.

How does astrology work?

We really don't know how astrology works. I say this quite honestly to you after 26 years of professional service. We know that early astrologers noticed correlations and documented those. Much astrological theory in recent times has been derived from mythic symbolism, esoteric principles, and therapeutic process.

Oddly enough, most professional astrologers got their start by setting out to prove that astrology doesn't work! The more they studied, the farther away they were from disproof, and the closer they got to seeing the value of astrology in understanding themselves and others.

Western astrology is called "tropical" and doesn't even work with correct physical planetary positions today. Because of the precession of the equinoxes, which make for "ages" such as the Age of Aquarius, Western astrology works instead with a more conceptual or ideal viewpoint. Eastern or Vedic astrology is "sidereal" and more true to physical realities. I have studied both Western and Eastern approaches, and now use Western astrology exclusively only because I am most familiar with it, and know that it does work.

My conclusion however, is that astrology "works" not because the planets cause anything [they don't], or because there is any exact mapping of events to planets [there isn't], but because the practice of astrology - the conversation of astrology - is A COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT ABOUT REALITY AT A VERY DEEP LEVEL, an agreement about life-process, soul-experience, what we're learning individually and collectively, and what meaning we place on our experience.

The birthchart provides an ACCESS POINT to open up a conversation about how the person is creating his life, how he can best maximize his talents, and achieve his goals for the future.

What about newspaper and magazine columns?

Newspaper and magazine columns use primarily the sun sign, though you can also read for your rising sign. Columns are mostly for the purpose of entertainment, and to interest people in looking more deeply into astrology and metaphysics. Because columns may use as little as one or two factors, as opposed to the dozens of factors an astrologer takes into account in reading your own chart, the information is limited, and the accuracy of the reading is limited. Everyone loves to read their horoscope, but few columns are written to speak to readers on a deep level, if only because they're dealing with such a few factors.

When I write my column for the Berkeley PSYCHIC READER, I use all the planets at the beginning of the month. I recommend that people read also for their Rising Sign [or Ascendant] if they know it. The rising sign is determined by the full birthdate, exact time of birth, and location of birth - especially the time. The exact time of your birth is normally shown on your birth certificate. You can find out your rising sign by having your chart professionally calculated and/or interpreted.

How does astrology fit with religion?

Anything that would come before God and direct spiritual information in the major and/or immediate decisions of life should be avoided by the religious person. Astrology can instead be used to complement religious life, not usurp it, and helps you to fulfill your talents, life purpose, and achieve success in all areas of life.

It's documented in the Bible that the 3 Wise Men (Magi) followed the bright star to find the baby Jesus. The birth of the Son of God in the flesh - the divine incarnation - represents the potential for the birth of the Christ Consciousness in the heart of Everyman. As given in Genesis, we too are sons and daughters of God, made in the image of God as creative spirit unlimited.

The ethics of astrological conversation?

There is an ethics to astrological conversation. There are ways to talk that foster fear and are negatively-programmatic vs. ways to talk that foster personal empowerment and responsibility and are positively inspiring. I have pioneered in astrological ethics and have championed the use of ethical language in astrological consultations.

How do I find out more?

Have your chart calculated and/or interpreted. Better yet, have a studio or phone reading and ask your questions about life issues and direction - this will make your astrology reading most meaningful for you.

You can find many quality books at your metaphysical bookstore and larger used bookstores. Here are a few to start with - the out-of-print books will often be found at larger used bookstores:

Davison, ASTROLOGY. Out of print.
Goodavage, WRITE YOUR OWN HOROSCOPE. Out of print.
Forrest, INNER SKY and CHANGING SKY.
Llewellyn, A TO Z HOROSCOPE MAKER AND DELINEATOR.

Because of time changes due to daylight savings time, war time, and for births in southern latitudes, it's best to have your chart professionally calculated for accuracy.

OURANOS
By Cathy Novak

The image of Ouranos (Uranus) depicts the brilliant and inspiring Sky Father hovering over the Earth, over his wife Gaia. Ouranos fathered the Titans, and included among his famous offspring was Cronus (Saturn) who in turn was the father of Zeus (Jupiter), foremost of the Olympian Gods. It would seem that Zeus inherited his penchant for throwing lightning bolts from his grandfather.

Ouranos is also the Greek word for "heaven," which we find throughout the New Testament.

This iconographic image of Ouranos is painted in egg tempera on a 10" round Maple panel. The panel was coated with several layers of home-made gesso, sanded between coats, then polished to semi-gloss before painting. The outer frame design was built up with additional gesso paste extruded from a metal-tipped tube very much like a miniature cake-decorating cone, with textures incised from dried gesso by using carving tools. The frame was then undercoated with a brick-red color and, finally, gilt.

The pigments are sometimes derived from semi-precious stones, such as Lapis Lazuli, which were used extensively in the Heavens surrounding Ouranos. Lapis powder is precious, but too beautiful to be refused when it "asks" to be used for certain projects. The sienna, ochre, and umber earth colors are mined from all over the world, and are available in a rainbow of soft and rich shades. Because metallic, gem, and stone-derived pigments can be poisonous, containing lead, mercury or arsenic, special care must be taken in their handling.

Egg tempera technique is time consuming but rewarding, as it affords both intimacy and control regarding materials and subject. Making my own paint, media, and gessos, plus preparing a painting substrate from scratch rather than relying on store-bought materials gives me a level of deep and total involvement that makes each work a true labor of love.

Blessings,
Cathy Novak

 SACRED WHITE SAGE
A way to clear negativity.
By Eileen Nauman

Copyright 2004-2005 Eileen Nauman
All Rights Reserved

Every Nation has its sage for ceremonial purposes. I was shown specific white, 'female' patches of sage a long time ago by my medicine man teacher, who was western Cherokee.

Sage is used for clearing negativity--inside and outside ourselves, and from our dwellings, a room, an office, an attic or any other type of structure. We use it to cleanse our auras, too, when we have a 'bad hair day' and we're carrying around a lot of junk that we want to get rid of in a hurry.

Sage emits negative ions; just as a waterfall or running water, emits the same thing. This is why, when people are near running water, they always feel cleaner, cleaned off or just 'better' for seeming no reason at all. But there is a deeper reason. Our aura holds positive ions, much like a carpet when you walk across it, creates static electricity. Only, these positive ions are like dust in our aura and it simply makes us feel sluggish, tired, or just not our usual frisky, peppy self.

The smoke from the sage meets the positive ions, clings to them and neutralizes them out of our aura, or from the room or house where you live or work.

PROTOCOL FOR THE USE OF WHITE SAGE

Let me take you, step-by-step, on how to utilize a wand or stick of sage:

The first rule is this: once the sage is lit, you do not stop it from burning. The spirit of the sage knows just how much negativity or positive ions are around and it will burn accordingly. When the ions have been neutralized, it will cease burning on its own. You can tell how 'bad' it is by the quality of the smoke the smudge stick emits: thin, light smoke indicates the place or person is fairly clean. Thick, rolling white smoke means the place or person has a lot of positive ions or negativity around them and it needs this thicker smoke to deal with it. If you are done smudging, then set the bowl on your electric or gas stove and let it burn itself out until it is done. Under no circumstances are you to put it under water to douse the smoke or do something to stop it from burning. The spirit of the wand knows what is needed, and where. If you watch the smoke, you will see it drift to a particular part of the room, car, or person because that is where the healing/catalyzation of energy needs to be done and accomplished.

1. Always have a heat proof bowl to put the sage in, after it has been ignited. We use an abalone shell; but any piece of thick, fired pottery (or even a Pyrex bowl) will do. If you are using a bowl, you may well want an oven mitten on you hand to prevent burns because sage burns HOT. It is the spiritual nature of it to do so. Do not use a container that is not bake or tempered for high heat--it will crack it and it could cause a fire. Do not use anything metal, because heat is conductive and you will get burned.

2. Be safe. Do not have doors or windows or a fan on when you "smudge" yourself, a room or your house. It can blow sparks out of the bowl and onto the floor or surrounding area. Don't be wearing billowy, long-sleeved blouse or shirt when you fan the smoke. Don't have long hair draped down near the bowl with the smudge stick being held in it. Be common sensed about this.

3. Light the sage with a match at the very tips of the leaves on top of the wand. Once they flame to life, then blow them out quickly. We use a feather fan to do this, but you can use a piece of stout paper or even cardboard or a paper fan. It's important to NOT let it blame and burn. Once it is lit, and the flame is blown out, it will smoke thinly or thickly, afterward. The catalyzation comes with the smoke, not the flame.

4. Place the lit, smoking top of the wand of sage deep down inside the bowl and steady the rest of it, on the stick portion at the other end, with your other hand.

SMUDGING A ROOM

Keep the windows and doors closed to the room you have chosen to smudge. You can take a fan or a small piece of cardboard and start in one corner of your room, and gently waft the smoke after it clears the bowl, from the floor, up, toward the ceiling. Do this in a clockwise circle in each corner of your room. When you are done with the fourth corner, move to the center of the room, raise the bowl chest high and waft smoke up toward the center of the room. You are now done. When you leave the room, shut the door behind you. When you go back in an hour later; you'll see that the room feels better and is even "lighter" appearing to your eyes than before.

SMUDGING A HOUSE

If you are doing a complete house, then do each room in this fashion. Do not miss a room. Get all of them. If you want only one room done, then close the door behind you and smudge the room--and leave the smoke in that room--do not open windows or doors to let it out. It will dissipate surprisingly swiftly. You can also smudge your garage and basement in the same, above manner. Just make sure the garage door is closed and that the door leading to the basement is closed while smudging and closed after you depart from it.

SMUDGING YOURSELF

Bend over, so that the bowl is about the level of your feet and ankles. Gently waft the smoke, with your fan, upward. As you slowly unbend and straighten up, you are bringing the sage/bowl and fanning the smoke up, up, upward until you've sent the smudging smoke up above your head. You are now "smudged" and clean, as we say.

SMUDGING AN ANIMAL

Take care not to burn the animal, or have sparks fly out on their coats or hair. Start at their head and gently waft the smoke from their feet to their head, and then move back, over their spinal area, and to their rear feet/tail region. They are now smudged.

SMUDGING AN OBJECT

If you have a piece of jewelry given to you, an heirloom piece, or something that you love, but it has "bad vibes" or just a bad feeling on it, then you can do the following: Lay it out on a table or some place where it is flat. Start at one end of the piece and gently fan the smoke across it, so that the smoke covers and flows across the entire piece. When it's done, let it sit for 24 hours, and then you can use it. The feeling/vibes will be very different. On a stubborn piece, you might have to do this 2 or 3 times, once a day, to get it entirely cleansed.

USING IT AS A TEA

I was taught to take 3 leaves, crinkle and break them up and put them into the bottom of a tea cup. Pour boiling water over them and let it steep 10 minutes. You can then drink it and eat the leaves. This is used to break a fever, induce a sweat and we drink this during a sweat lodge to cleanse ourselves of our inner negativity and darkness. If you're feeling bad, sometimes a cup of white sage tea helps a lot. Drink only one cup in a 24 hour period.

A SAGE BATH--AHHHH...

One of the nicest things you can do for yourself is crinkle up an entire wand or one ounce of dried leaves, into your bathtub. Fill it with warm to moderately hot water (don't burn yourself). Then, settle down into this big cup of tea for about 10-15 minutes. The sage is a natural cleanser and your physical body and aura both get cleaned up this way. It is particularly wonderful after a highly stressful time.
